Indiana university professor claims miraculous brain tumor healing
An Indiana University neuroscience professor who claims prayer caused the remission of his brain tumor is featured in a national documentary exploring cases of faith-based medical “miracles” premiering next month.
Joshua Brown, a psychology and neuroscience professor at IU Bloomington, says his glioma brain tumor was healed after years of stagnant medical progress when he and his wife started receiving blessings at healing meetings across the country.
In the wake of his healing, Brown and his wife founded the Global Medical Research Institute, a nonprofit research organization that studies scientific and medical cases of claimed miraculous healing through prayer.
Why does Joshua Brown say prayer healed his brain tumor?
Brown detailed his diagnosis and what he called “miraculous” healing in a 2022 New York Times article.
Brown was first diagnosed with a glioma — a seizure-causing brain tumor — over 20 years ago, shortly after the birth of his first daughter. Doctors at the time prescribed only anticonvulsant medication, believing surgery or chemotherapy wouldn’t do much for Brown’s prognosis.
In the years that followed, Brown began seeking out Christian healing revivals and traveling with healing missionaries across the U.S., in hopes of a miracle. One day, an M.R.I. scan revealed his tumor had turned into scar tissue.
Brown said the lack of a clear scientific explanation to his healing prompted him to begin exploring instances of seemingly miraculous healing around the world.
What does Brown’s nonprofit do?
In 2016, Brown and his wife founded the Global Medical Research Institute, a nonprofit that investigates the impact of healing prayer in medical and scientific fields. The GMRI investigates and publishes case studies of “claimed miraculous healing,” and is even conducting a clinical trial on the impact of prayer on healing.
The GMRI accepts testimonies of miraculous healings, which it then vets against medical records and professional expert review before deciding if a case merits publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
What is the CBN documentary about?
Brown’s healing story is one of several testimonies in the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) News documentary “Investigating the Supernatural: Miracles.”
The documentary, narrated by journalist Billy Hallowell, explores real-life accounts of miraculous healing across the U.S. as told by people like Brown who witnessed them.
Other accounts include a cardiologist who says prayer helped to resuscitate a patient who was legally dead for 40 minutes, and a former New Jersey police officer who was able to walk again after a decade of being paralyzed from a work accident.
